DR. TOMLIN PAUL RECEIVES GL/UWI PREMIUM TEACHING AWARD

Dr. Tomlin Paul, lecturer of Community Health, Faculty of Medical Sciences at the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), was awarded the prestigious Guardian Life/UWI Premium Teaching Award 2006, at a special awards function held at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona, Kingston, Jamaica, recently.

Dr. Paul serves as undergraduate co-ordinator in the section of Community Health and is Programme Director of the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery Programme at the University.

He was selected from a field of five nominees by an esteemed panel of international judges, headed by Dr. Christopher Knapper, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Queen’s University, Canada and Senior Research Fellow, University of Oxford.

The other nominees include Dr. Hedy Isaacs, lecturer, Department of Government; Professor Kathleen Coard, lecturer, Department of Pathology, Dr. Paulette Fereria, lecturer, Department of Educational Studies and Dr. Michael J. Ponnambalam who lectures in the Department of Physics.

In his pursuit of excellence in teaching, Dr. Paul has conducted research on health promotion, allergic triggers for asthma and medical education. He is currently part of a collaborative team at the UWI examining the relationship between diet and prostate cancer in Jamaica. He recently became a Fellow of the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER), an agency focused on leadership development in Medical Education.

In accepting his award, Dr. Paul explained how humbled he was by the award, and noted that of critical importance to his development as an educator is the role of his students and understanding their day to day experiences.

The Premium Teaching Award was initiated by Guardian Holdings Limited on the University campuses in the three territories, Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad, after it was introduced eight years ago at the Trinidad’s St. Augustine Campus. The Programme is its third year at the Mona Campus and similar to all campuses, the Premium Teaching Award alternates yearly with a Premium Teaching Lecture. The programme aims at enhancing the teaching and learning process while simultaneously recognizing the accomplishments of outstanding educators.
