Guardian New Life Plus

New Life Plus is a rider (an additional benefit that is attached to a life policy) which provides a lump sum benefit payable on the first diagnosis of a critical illness.

Purpose: 
To provide cash in the event of any one of the under mentioned critical illnesses.
Maximum coverage: 
$6,000,000
Minimum coverage: 
$500,000
Issue ages: 
The policy may be issued to males and females between the ages of 16 and 55 years.
Benefit: 
The coverage is payable on the first diagnosis of any of the following critical illnesses where death has not occurred within thirty (30) days immediately following the date of diagnosis: Blindness Heart Attack Paralysis Cancer Kidney Failure Stroke Coma Major Burns The Rider will then cease to be in force.
Claims: 
Claims must be made no later than six (6) months after the first diagnosis of a critical illness.
Exceptions: 

No benefits are payable on diagnosis of a critical illness if it were caused by or it resulted from:

  • Intentional self-inflicted injuries, while sane or insane
  • Committing, attempting or provoking any criminal offence
  • War, declared or undeclared, or any civil disturbance
  • Military service
  • Intoxication by substances other than those prescribed by a licensed physician, or the inhalation of any gas or toxic substance
  • Pregnancy, miscarriage or childbirth
  • Taking part or attempting to take part in any capacity in aerial flights except as a fare-paying passenger on an airline which has regularly published schedules and which is licensed by the country in which it is registered to carry passengers for hire.
  • Any pre-existing condition known but not disclosed to the company.

Payment of premiums: 

The premium, in respect of this rider, is payable on the due dates specified on the policy schedule until any one of the following:

  • The date of death of the life insured
  • The date the life insured is diagnosed as having one of the critical illness outlined above
  • The policy anniversary after the life insured attains age 65

The premium in respect of the rider, shall be payable along with the premiums on the life policy and will not be accepted separately.

Non-payment of premiums: 

Should any premium payable in respect of this Rider not be paid on or before its due date:

  • The unpaid premium may be paid without addition in the 30 days grace period following such due date, and until the end of the 30 days grace the Rider shall remain in force. If the said premium is unpaid at the end of the 30 days grace period the Rider shall lapse forthwith.
  • After the Rider has lapsed all benefits thereunder shall cease and it shall not be competent for the Life Insured to revive such Rider except with the consent of the company and on such terms and conditions including evidence of insurability as it deems fit to require.

The inadvertent acceptance by the company of payments of a premium when no longer due will not constitute a waiver of this provision. The premium will be refunded.

DEFINITION OF CRITICAL ILLNESSES
 
Blindness
Total, permanent and irreversible loss of vision in both eyes.
 
Cancer
Cancer is the presence of an uncontrolled growth and the spread of malignant cells.
Incontrovertible evidence of the invasion of tissue or definite histology of a malignant growth must be produced. 
The term “cancer" also includes LUKEMIA, LYMPHOMA and Hodgkin’s disease.
 
Exclusions:
  • Carcinoma in situ
  • All skin cancers except malignant melanomas
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Cancers caused directly or indirectly by AIDS, HIV infection, and other conditions related to or arising from HIV infection, including but not limited to Karposi’s Sarcoma.
  • All tumours which are histologically described as pre-malignant, showing early malignant change, or having malignant potential.
  • Stage 1 Hodgkin’s disease.
Coma
A state of unconsciousness with no reaction to external stimuli or internal needs, persisting continuously with the use of life support systems for a period of at least 140 hours.
 
Heart Attack
Being the death of a portion of the heart muscle as a result of inadequate blood supply to the relevant area, the diagnosis being evidenced by a history of typical chest pain, new electro-cardiographic changes and by elevated levels of cardiac enzymes.
 
Kidney Failure
Being end stage renal failure presented as chronic irreversible failure of both kidneys to function, as a result of which regular renal dialysis is initiated, or renal transplant is carried out.
 
Major Burns
Third degree burns covering at least 20% of the surface of the person’s body.
 
Paralysis
Complete and permanent loss of use of two or more limbs through paralysis.
 
Stroke
Being any cerebrovascular incident producing sequelae lasting more than 24 hours and including infraction of the brain tissue, haemorrhage and embolisation from an extra-cranial source. Evidence of permanent neurological deficit must be produced. Transient ischaemic attacks are not covered.
